THROWAWAY NOTION
I wrote ‘Throwaway Notion’ during that period a couple of years ago in which there was an overwhelming amount of discussion about immigration. With alarming speed, expressions of xenophobia that had been left fallow for some time reseeded themselves and were shoe-horned into the arena of acceptability. The song talks about the disconcerting speed with which noble and lofty ideals can be eroded and replaced with fear and mistrust of the outsider. It talks about how diabolical but effective is the cruel genius of ‘scapegoating’ them for the misdeeds and failures of people in power.
